Best Camping in Maui on Tripadvisor: Find traveller reviews, candid photos, and prices for camping in Maui, Hawaii. Breakfast included 0. This beach is beautiful! We did not actually go down to the beach but stayed up on the cliff side. The waves are huge out here and there were several people surfing which was very fun to watch! On the beach were several huge turtles sunning. There is a little path to the far right that takes you down to the rocks for some spectacular photos.

Featured Gay Friendly Tours in Maui

Gay Travel Maui

Maui is Hawaii’s second-largest island with plenty of gay-friendly resorts to choose from. Maui’s breathtaking scenery and rural vibe contribute to its popularity as a romantic gay getaway. Couples have been vacationing and honeymooning here for decades. With same-sex marriage legal, we can’t think of a more beautiful place to say I do with the one you love!

The island is a premier whale-watching destination, with Humpback Whales wintering off the coast annually. There’s also Haleakala National Park on the island if you’ve ever wanted to hike across a dormant volcano. The traditional Hawaiian activities of surfing, snorkeling, and diving are also readily accessible and often complimented by windsurfing, parasailing, or scuba diving for the more adventuresome gay travelers.

The Valley Isle may be renowned for its romantic atmosphere, and the weather definitely helps contribute to that reputation. Maui’s large size and rugged topography make the weather here a little bit more unpredictable than most places. Warm, sunny days are commonplace though, and it’s almost always 80ish degrees. While rainfall is less prominent during the summer months, it’s still expected daily, but it doesn’t typically last long. This is paradise after all!

It is not a surprise to us that the locals say that, “Maui no ka oi” – “Maui is the best!”

Maui Gay Scene

Maui may not have a central gay scene or hub but that doesn’t mean there won’t be anything for the gay traveler to do. Some say many in the LGBT community socialize near the local beaches, so hit the beach (why else would go to the islands anyway?) and you’ll find the perfect atmosphere that you are looking for.

Jim

Being a predominantly couple-centric island away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities on Oahu means Maui doesn’t have any gay-specific clubs or bars. Hawaii’s “aloha” spirit makes it generally laid back though, and people are understandably welcoming and friendly in places often described as ‘paradise.’ You shouldn’t have any problem making friends.

There are several places you can be on the lookout for other gays though. South of Wailea, in Makena State Beach, there is a nude beach that is popular with gay locals and tourists called Little Beach. Out Traveler has called it one of the top 5 nude beaches in the country. Maui also has a Pride celebration in June, and make sure to check out Both Sides Now’s and Maui Gay Pride’s sites to see if there are any scheduled events for when you might be visiting!

When to Visit

Like the rest of Hawaii, Maui is a warm destination no matter when you might choose to visit. Located in the tropics, though, there is a rainy season that takes place through the winter (November to March), though it's usually not a hard enough rain to make a trip unenjoyable. And many travelers specifically visit Maui during the winter to take advantage of warmer weather than back home on the continental USA.

Maui Gay-Friendly Dining

There's a bit of a resort feel to Maui and you'll find all sorts of cuisine available, but keep an eye out specifically for local Hawaiian BBQ or similar traditional style foods at these gay-friendly restaurants.

Mama's Fish House

Mama’s Fish House’s interior really set the Polynesian ambiance with the Tapa covered walls and old island-style structure. Plus, their menu features fresh fish caught daily and even lists the name of the fisherman and where they caught their fish. So you know it's fresh!

Betty’s Beach Cafe

Betty’s Beach Café is a mix of tasty food, cute friendly staff, yummy drinks, and a view to die for. Come for their happy hour specials!

Castaway Cafe on Kaanapali Beach

A quiet cafe with standard breakfast dishes, and other local and fresh menu items like fish. It's a low-key restaurant, maybe great for a stopover while out and about to grab something for a beach picnic.

Maui Gay-Friendly Nightlife

Although there are no specific gay or lesbian bars in Maui, there are several mixed gay and straight bars that are just as good.

Vibe Bar Maui

A comfortable (and air-conditioned) gay-friendly bar, Vibe plays a variety of music and has a large selection of drinks. The small, unassuming bar hosts a variety of theme nights, from live karaoke to Mezcal Mondays.

Betty's Beach Cafe

Beach Hook Up Maui Island

While it operates as a restaurant most of the time, Betty's Beach Cafe is still one of the best nightlife spots in Maui for LGBTQ visitors and gay tourists. The crowd is a lot of fun and it's one of the most welcoming places on the island.

Safety

Maui remains one of the most popular of the Hawaiian Islands for LGBTQ tourists, and the thriving tourism industry on the island means it's a very welcoming and friendly place for everyone. You can expect a safe and welcoming holiday on Maui despite there may not be that many specifically gay or lesbian bars.
